Lets make 2018 even better!
Nationals success for Holywell Bay
Holywell Bay Surf Lifesaving Club have been in a celebratory mood this weekend, following a week of outstanding competition in the National Surf Lifesaving competitions, hosted by Holywell Bay, and run by Surf Lifesaving GB. The annual contest returned to Cornwall for the first time since 2012, and saw a full week of racing by 1300 competitors aged from 7 to 60+, drawn from over 30 clubs, some of whom had travelled from Wales, and as far as Broadstairs in Kent.
Competition began on Saturday 12th, in challenging high tide conditions, with the masters’ events, including surf swim race, continuing with board racing and beach sprints. On Sunday 13th, competition continued with surf ski racing, relays and the notorious Ocean man/ woman event. After two days, Holywell emerged clear winners in both male and female categories, seeing off the opposition by a significant margin.
After a rest day, it was the turn of the youth to compete, with athletes aged 13 to 19 involved. Once again, Holywell delivered great, if challenging conditions, and, under mostly sunny skies, the competitors were put through their paces. This time, after some thrilling events that saw boards and skis catapaulted into the air and blown across the beach, it was Portreath’s team that emerged victorious, seeing off the team from Gyllyngvase.
Finally, on Friday 18th, it was the turn of the youngest competitors, the nippers, to enter the arena. A staggering 700 children and their families made their way to the beach, eager to achieve greatness and win medals. It was a glorious sight, to see several ‘arenas’ of competition, and the flags, tents and banners of the competitors’ village whipping in the strong Atlantic winds. There was a distinct carnival atmosphere, full of colour and noise, with cheers of encouragement echoing around the busy bay and boards strewn along the shoreline. Despite some heavy downpours, spirits were not dampened, even when the board events had to be called off due to safety concerns over the conditions and swell. This time, it was Woolacombe who took the top spot.
An event of this scale does not happen without significant support from the community, and Holywell Bay SLSC demonstrated true team spirit, as an army of volunteers welcomed, marshalled, transported, fed, entertained and supported others throughout the event, extending a warm Cornish welcome to all who arrived at the beach. The club has received enthusiastic praise from visitors, several heralding this event the best ever. SLSGB, the organisation behind the event also provided a hardy group of committed marshalls, referees and water safety cover, all appreciated by those who competed.
It is not all about the competition, however. At the heart of Holywell Bay Surf Lifesaving Club’s ethos is a strong environmental drive, and the club had committed to making this the most sustainable event possible. All competitors were given reusable drinks bottles and a water refill point, compostable cups at the bar and a clear environmental message throughout the event, with the Marine Conservation Society raising awareness on how to protect the asset held most dear to the competitors: the ocean. As a result, organisers estimate that up to 10000 plastic drinks bottles that might have been brought to the beach, were not.
Planning is already under way for next year’s event, and Holywell Bay Surf Lifesaving Club would like to thank all who made this year such an incredible, exciting community event, including residents of Cubert and Holywell Bay for their patience and understanding during the event.

While doing yoga, nibbling a free range three bean chilli nachos, sipping Holywell spring water in a non plastic cup, listening to a forty two piece all male voice choir followed by an orchestra of brass and percussion.
I became aware that things were going quite well last week.
What is this image we have left upon the good people of Great Britain?
It is of paradise, it is of perfection, it is of a dreamy island where the normal struggles of life don’t exist. All the troubles in our lives are washed away in a golden-hued sunset, it is of relaxation and coconut scented sun cream.
How can we improve for next year?
Bare back horse rides to the beach with Ross Poldark? Let’s not rule it out!
Sit back and enjoy some of the feedback from the champs, it goes to show what we can achieve when we all work together…
